IT’S TRUE, WE ARE WHAT WE EAT
It’s a sentiment that originated in 1826 and almost two-hundred years later it stands true. The food you consume is one of the most important factors for long term health and happiness.
FOOD IMPACTS HOW WE FEEL
Food and nutrition can either increase stress (i.e., add to it and make things harder for the body) or it can decrease physiological stress (support and help the body out). We therefore want to move towards nutrition that is going to do the latter – support our body. The more stress the body is dealing with, the worse we’re going to feel.
I ALWAYS TELL MY CLIENTS THERE IS NO PERFECT DIET
It would be nice if it was that simple but in reality, everyone is different so it’s important to find the right diet (and methods in which you fuel your body) that benefit you specifically. What works really well for one person, might not for another. As a Holistic Nutritionist, I know that it’s about tuning into the body and noticing when you feel ‘good’ and when you feel ‘bad’, then attributing it to the food you’re eating.
THINK OF YOUR BODY AS A WELL-OILED MACHINE
Every system in your body is inter-linked and no single system acts independently. It’s important to assess what is going on in all the body systems. To understand your health, nutritionists take a whole-body approach and look at the bigger picture. It’s important to think of the body like a system that requires constant fine tuning to maintain optimum balance. One of the ways that we can do this is by optimising nutrition.
AND A HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST AS YOUR BODY’S MECHANIC
I will take a look at the food you’re eating, what you’re drinking, how you’re exercising (even what thoughts you’re thinking!) and analyse what’s going on in your body, and most importantly, why it’s going on. Then I can recalibrate things. Maybe make small tweaks here and there, such as eating more protein, having more cruciferous vegetables, drinking more water, adding fermented foods and reducing coffee (yes, sometimes that is required I’m afraid). Overall, I make sure you are getting all the food and nutrients that your body needs.
REPEAT AFTER ME – NUTRIENTS, NUTRIENTS, NUTRIENTS!
Nutrients are the beneficial molecules we get from our food: our essential minerals and vitamins. You’ve probably already heard of zinc, vitamin C and magnesium already, but there are numerous essential nutrients that our body is unable to make. We have to get them from food – that’s why we call them essential. If we’re not getting enough, the body’s various systems, such as the digestive, hormonal, respiratory or nervous system are not able to work as they should. For instance, our immune system requires a huge amount of zinc. If we’re zinc deficient, our response to bugs and viruses becomes less effective.
